Description

North Pacific Humpback Whales migrate over 3,500 miles from their summer feeding grounds in Alaska to their winter home in Hawaii every year. From November through May, an average of 8,000-10,000 of these majestic creatures birth their young, breed the next generation, and frolic within the warm, protected waters of the Hawaiian islands. The sanctuary provided between the islands of Maui, Kahoolawe, Lanai, and Molokai is an ideal birthing grounds for the humpbacks as there is a lack of natural predators, a variety of ocean depths, and great underwater visibility.

There are many options for whale-watching adventures on Maui. Most of them will drop a hydrophone into the ocean so you can hear live the beautiful and complicated song of the male humpback. While onboard, you may see a mother and calf frolicking with an escort nearby or a competition pod of several males vying to breed with one female. It is always exciting to see these amazing and beautiful creatures up close in their natural habitat. When they come to the surface, you may be close enough to hear them breathe or you might see one or more feisty whales slapping their tails or pectoral fins or even breaching with a spectacular splash.
